Visualizing "Purchases" with Location Information x Receipt Data: The Challenge of "Torima Receipt"

Speakers:

Shotaro Kunihiro, Alliance Promotion Department, Public & Corporate Sales Division, Geotechnologies Inc.

Affiliation and position information is as of the time of distribution

On June 4th (Thursday) and 5th (Friday), at the "Location Business & Marketing EXPO 2026" held in Hamamatsucho, Tokyo, we welcomed Mr. Kunihiro of GeoTechnologies, a platinum sponsor, as our guest to discuss the much-talked-about "Torima Receipt." By utilizing the newly added receipt submission function in "Torima," a point-earning app that allows users to accumulate points through travel, and combining location information, pedestrian flow data, and purchase data, it becomes possible to analyze area-specific purchasing trends and measure advertising effectiveness—aspects that were difficult to discern with conventional POS data. We delved into the possibilities of "next-generation retail data utilization" as envisioned by GeoTechnologies, including its application to shelf layout proposals and sales promotion strategies for retailers and manufacturers, and even its potential for improving the accuracy of pedestrian flow analysis.

New Receipt Submission Feature Launched by the Point-Earning App "Torima"

Torima, operated by GeoTechnologies, is a leading point-earning app in Japan that allows users to accumulate points based on distance traveled and steps taken. It has grown into a massive platform boasting approximately 2 million daily active users (DAU).

A new feature added to Torima at the end of last year is "Torima Receipt." Users can earn additional points (miles) by taking photos of receipts received from their daily shopping and submitting them. Currently, approximately 300,000 receipts are collected daily, with approximately 100,000 users continuously submitting receipts monthly. A business has begun that uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to read this vast amount of receipt data, statistically analyzing it in a way that does not identify individuals, and providing it as "purchase information" to support companies' marketing activities.

Unrivaled Uniqueness Through Linking Foot Traffic Data and Purchase Information

While several services already exist on the market providing receipt data, the greatest feature of GeoTechnologies' "Torima Receipt" lies in its ability to directly link the company's strengths—"foot traffic data" and "detailed attribute data"—with purchase information.

Specifically, it's possible to visualize the entire sequence of actions taken by users visiting a specific area (e.g., within a 1km radius of Shibuya Station)—including their attributes, what they actually purchased at which stores, and which manufacturers' products they chose—as area-specific purchasing characteristics. This allows for a three-dimensional understanding of consumer movement—"who went where, and what they ultimately bought"—a view previously unseen with conventional foot traffic analysis or POS data alone.

Improved Accuracy of In-Store Analysis and Resolution of POS Data Challenges

Previously, foot traffic analysis using GPS faced technical challenges, such as the difficulty in identifying "which tenant a user entered" within large-scale complexes like shopping malls and train station buildings. However, by combining receipt data as "proof of purchase," it becomes possible to definitively prove that a customer entered a specific store and made a purchase.

Furthermore, while store POS data can track "what was sold," identifying "who bought it" can be difficult. By utilizing "Torima Receipt," advanced behavioral analysis combining foot traffic and purchases becomes possible, even in the form of statistical information that conceals personal information. It is expected to play a powerful role as a data source that complements POS data.

Specific Use Cases Supporting Decision-Making for Manufacturers and Retailers

"Torima Receipt" is primarily intended for use in the sales departments of manufacturers and the buyer departments of retailers. Two specific use cases are outlined below:

The first is optimizing shelf allocation proposals for retail stores. While manufacturers can track sales of their own products, it is difficult to track the situation of competitors in real time. "Torima Receipt" allows for tracking store name, purchase date and time, unit price, and quantity, enabling inferences about category-specific sales analysis in competitor stores. For example, based on objective data such as "competitor stores in this area see a high purchase rate of specific products among men in their 30s," it becomes possible to propose more persuasive shelf placement and product assortments.

Secondly, this involves considering new store openings and optimizing existing stores. By analyzing purchasing trends in potential store locations in advance and customizing the store's product mix to match area characteristics, we support store operations that meet customer needs.

One-stop service from promotion to effectiveness verification through "Must-Buy" initiatives

Furthermore, the "Must-Buy" function, scheduled for implementation within fiscal year 2026, will enable not only analysis but also the direct implementation of promotional prototypes. This system delivers advertisements for specific products to "Torima" users and awards bonus points to users who actually purchase those products and submit receipts.

With the introduction of this function, everything from increasing awareness of new products to securing sales in specific distribution chains, and even measuring changes in purchase share before and after campaign implementation, can be completed on a single platform called "Torima." Leveraging our ability to reach 2 million people daily, our vertically integrated service, encompassing everything from awareness to purchase and effectiveness evaluation, is a unique strength not found in other services.

Future Outlook and Expectations for "Location Business & Marketing Espo 2026"

Currently, "Torimaresheet" is in the research and development stage, with product master data development and data cleansing underway. GeoTechnologies is seeking PoC (Proof of Concept) partners to explore the possibilities of data utilization together, in order to further develop this service and make it even more valuable.

At "Location Business & Marketing Espo 2026," held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center Hamamatsucho Hall from June 4th to 5th, 2026, GeoTechnologies will showcase the latest demo at their booth. Furthermore, a session by Mr. Kunihiro is scheduled for 1:30 PM on June 4th, where he will present a new form of value creation combining pedestrian flow data and purchase data.

Summary

"Torima Receipt," promoted by Geotechnologies, is an innovative marketing platform that combines pedestrian flow data from "Torima," which has 2 million active users, with receipt data, which serves as evidence of daily shopping. This system not only provides confirmation of store entry, which was difficult with conventional pedestrian flow analysis, but also has the potential to solve the challenges of understanding customer attributes inherent in POS data. For manufacturers and retailers, it enables meticulous shelf allocation proposals based on competitive analysis, one-stop promotions connecting advertising to purchase, and effectiveness verification. Currently in the PoC phase, this service is highly anticipated for future development, aiming to create new businesses by combining location information and purchase data.
