Speakers:

Satoru Hirano, Head of Business Promotion Department, Hino Computer Systems Co., Ltd.

Affiliation and position information is as of the time of distribution

Our guest this time is Mr. Hirano from Hino Computer Systems. We will be discussing "Logita," a system that anonymizes connected data acquired from trucks and buses and uses it to solve social issues. In addition to Hino Motors, they also handle data from Mitsubishi Fuso, and the scale of their data covers approximately 500,000 vehicles. What can we learn from data unique to commercial vehicles, such as location information, fuel consumption, engine speed, and safety device operation? We will delve into how data from trucks that run 24 hours a day will transform Japan's logistics and transportation infrastructure, from road repair and snow-stuck detection to identifying passable roads during disasters, to logistics DX and addressing the 2024 problem.

Overview of Hino Computer Systems and the Birth of "Logita," a Big Data Platform for Commercial Vehicles

Hino Computer Systems Co., Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hino Motors, Ltd. and is responsible for system development and operation as the IT department for the entire group. Under the purpose of "solving challenges in human and logistics movement with the power of digital technology," the company promotes DX support for transportation companies and the utilization of commercial vehicle data. At the core of this initiative is "Logita," a platform that provides data for commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses. Driving data sent from communication devices installed during vehicle manufacturing is anonymized and used to solve social issues. The data is provided in four formats: raw data, analysis reports, real-time APIs, and dashboard viewing, and is utilized by local governments, construction consultants, map companies, and others.

Expanding to 500,000 Vehicles: Integration of Connected Data from Hino Motors and Mitsubishi Fuso

The data handled by Logita has expanded beyond the framework of individual manufacturers, evolving into one of the largest commercial vehicle big data sets in Japan. From July 2024, in addition to conventional data, data from Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus was also added, bringing the total number of target vehicles to approximately 500,000. From the vehicles, dynamic information such as location, date and time, engine on/off status, vehicle speed, engine RPM, and fuel consumption is acquired. Furthermore, real-time data on behaviors specific to commercial vehicles, such as ABS and PCS (Pre-Collision System) operation logs, and ASR (Automatic Stability Resistance) data indicating wheel slippage, can also be obtained.

Characteristics of Commercial Vehicle Data: Differences from Passenger Cars and the Strengths of 24/7 Operation

Data obtained from commercial vehicles has unique strengths that differ significantly from those of typical passenger cars. While the average daily mileage of a passenger car is only about 12 kilometers, trucks travel an average of over 250 kilometers per day—more than 20 times the distance—allowing for the collection of comprehensive data on the road network. Also, because trucks operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including scheduled routes, stable data can be obtained regardless of the time of day, including nighttime. By capturing the movements of each vehicle type, such as garbage trucks, refrigerated trucks, and dump trucks, we can visualize trends across various industries throughout Japan in real time.

Application Examples: Construction Consulting, Road Repair, Snow Road Stuck Detection and Safety Device Logs

Logita's data is widely used by construction consultants and local governments for infrastructure maintenance, management, and planning. In the analysis of road stuck (deadheading) during heavy snowfall, dangerous areas are identified by analyzing ASR (Autonomous Stability Response) logs indicating wheel slippage of large trucks. In addition, we offer a variety of solutions, including road repair priority determination, real-time vehicle movement management services, and optimal location analysis reports for hydrogen stations.

Disaster Response: Rapid Support and Infrastructure Restoration with "Passable Roads Map"

In natural disasters such as earthquakes and heavy rains, commercial vehicle data plays an indispensable role in supporting disaster-stricken areas and restoring infrastructure. Even if passenger cars can pass during a disaster, if large trucks cannot, relief supplies cannot be delivered, making accurate tracking of traffic history crucial. The company released a daily "Passable Roads Map" that visualizes the routes that large trucks could actually travel during large-scale disasters. By showing passable roads, it prevents unnecessary detours and supports the rapid transport of goods and regional recovery.

Approach to the 2024 Logistics Problem and Improving Work Efficiency through Transportation DX

The company is addressing the "2024 problem" facing the logistics industry, such as driver shortages and labor regulations, from both data utilization and transportation DX perspectives. Through the analysis of driving data, they are implementing improvements to optimize transportation routes and suggesting improvements tailored to actual operational conditions. They are also supporting the introduction of DX products that reduce the burden on on-site staff, such as automated roll call systems (remote roll call using robots and PCs) permitted by legal revisions. By combining improved data accuracy and automation of on-site work, they are supporting the construction of a sustainable logistics system that balances legal compliance with increased productivity.

Summary

Hino Computer Systems' commercial vehicle data platform, "Logita," is a massive dataset of 500,000 vehicles, integrating data from Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso, and serves as a crucial foundation supporting Japan's social infrastructure. The driving trajectory and behavior data of trucks, which operate 24/7, 365 days a year, can be considered a "mirror of the economy," reflecting industry trends and road conditions.

From optimizing road repairs and detecting vehicles stuck in snow, to creating "passable road maps" during disasters, and even analyzing hydrogen station locations and addressing the logistics challenges of 2024, Logita data contributes to solving a variety of social issues. Further applications are expected in urban planning and infrastructure maintenance, such as identifying risks associated with entering narrow roads and implementing safety measures at hazardous locations.

Logita's role in realizing a sustainable, safe, and efficient logistics and transportation society based on accurate data will only continue to grow.
